17 Amazing Things to Do in Milos, Greece

by Stephanie May 29, 2021
by Stephanie May 29, 2021
Plaka, capital town of Milos

For such a small island, Milos is packed with things to do. Whether you are looking for a relaxing holiday or want to mix things up, Milos is perfect for a weekend getaway or even a whole week.

Beautiful Firopotamos Beach, milos

Beautiful Firopotamos Beach

  1. Beach Hopping

Milos has a ton of world class pristine beaches. You can choose whether to go beach hopping with a car or from the sea with a boat. Regardless, the method you end up choosing, I still recommend hiring a car as it will make covering the whole island much easier.

With a car you will be able to check out the amazing moon landscape of Sarakiniko beach, the turquoise beautiful waters of Firiplaka along with the intimate small beach of Tsigrado right next door. Pollonia beach will also be a quick trip away by car.

Feeling lazy? Well you can even choose to spend the day lounging in the main city at Adamas beach which is only about 5 minutes away from the main port of Adamas.

Sarakiniko Beach

Sarakiniko Beach

  1. Teleport yourself to the moon on Sarakiniko Beach

You absolutely cannot skip this! Sarakiniko beach is the main reason why we made it to Milos and I promise that you won’t be disappointed. The landscape is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Picture tons on white rock with a very unique shape. And somehow the pristine blue water carved a little cove amongst them.

There is also a small sandy beach area but people just lay around on the rocks as it is just as comfortable for sunbathing. Plus the view is just better there. You should definitely take a little stroll and make sure you see the whole area. Cliff jumping is also quite popular there. Most people arrive by car but some also come via the sea in boats and catamarans.

  1. See the beautiful sea window of Kleftiko Beach

This is a beautiful beach with a rock formation over the water. The only thing is that Kleftiko is mainly accessible via boat. I’d say that it’s totally worth it. However if you don’t feel like hiring a boat, rest assure that there are still plenty of beaches for you to go to with a car rental.

Beautiful restaurant in Plaka, Milos

Beautiful restaurant in Plaka, Milos

  1. Visit the Colorful Town of Plakes and the Capital City of Plaka

Ah! Plakes! What a beautiful little town. Plakes is a very sleepy little town situated in the hills of Milos. In order to get there, you will take the curvy road and once you arrive on top, you can park your car and walk in the town.

Plakes , milos

Plakes can feel a bit eerie at times, frozen in time…

Plakes Milos

Yes some parts can be isolated but we also had an amazing encounter with some local Greek Grandmas and Grandpas 🙂

Now just so you know, Plakes and Plaka are two different towns. Most tourists confuse them both because the names are so similar. It’s also totally understandable since they are only about 1km apart and they slowly merge into each other. Besides these facts the two towns each have a distinct vibe. Plakes, on one hand, can be a bit eerie at times and feels like it’s stuck in time. The town is mostly empty with a few ongoing renovation work to restore houses and also establish new restaurants. The few local residents there are still extremely warm and genuinely welcoming.

Plaka, capital town of Milos

What do you do when the whole town is yours? Of course, you squeeze in a little dance here and there 🙂

On the other end, Plaka is the capital city of Milos and is filled with cute little cafes and sitting areas. It is the perfect place to take a stroll or just stop by for breakfast, lunch and dinners. You can also do some shopping there as they had a few jewelry and unique clothing stores.

If you have time and are up for some exploration, I totally recommend walking around Plakes and slowly making your way to Plaka. It will give you a better understanding of the area.

Play Chess in Adamas Port, Milos

Fancy some Chess Playing?

  1. Play Chess in the main waterfront port of Adamas

Right in the port of Adamas, there is a cute chessboard on the floor that you really cannot miss as you walk on the sidewalk. It is located right next to the Aggeliki Ice Cream Shop

Aggeliki cafe milos

What about some gelato?

  1. Ice Cream or Gelato at Aggeliki Ice Cream Shop

Right next to the chess area, still on the port of Adamas is Aggeliki Ice Cream Shop. They call it an ice cream shop since it has an extensive ice cream and gelato selection inside.

brunch at Aggeliki cafe, Milos

Anyone else loves a good Brunch?

You can find all sorts of desserts but that place is much more than a pastry place. We had a brunch there on our last day and it was really amazing. There is a terrace outside where you can enjoy your meal with a sangria or two while people-watching.

  1. Eat authentic Greek cuisine at World famous “ Oh Hamos”

Now I have to be honest, we tried to go to Oh Hamos twice and both times the queue was just out of this world. They didn’t seem to take reservations either when we were there. So if you have some time to kill, you can try your luck there. This place is very popular for Greek cuisine and most of the sitting area is the terrace outside which is open air. The restaurant is alongside the main road right across the main city beach of Adamas.

  1. Take a walk around the small Fishing village of Klima

Klima has got to be one of the most beautiful towns in Milos. It is a small village by the sea. Just park your car and go for a stroll. Just don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes.

Beautiful Sunset in Madrakia

Beautiful Sunset over Madrakia Fishing Village

  1. Catch a Sunset in Klima or Anywhere Else on the Island

While you’re in Klima, you can book a table at Astakas Seafood restaurant for sunset. The restaurant closes quite late but if you want to sit down and enjoy your meal with the sunset, book early as that time slot is quite popular.

  1. kayaking in Klima

This is another popular activity to do in Klima or anywhere else on the island. You can sign up for a small group tour and you will have the time of your life navigating around those cute beaches and spending a day at sea.

dinner in Pollonia Milos

Barely had time to snap the pic 🙂

dinner in Pollonia

Octopus and Seafood Stew

  1. Have dinner at the beautiful port of Pollonia

Pollonia is on the other side of Milos. This is mostly where you will find a few bigger hotels and resorts. There is a beautiful large beach but you can also go for dinner. There are many restaurants along the sidewalk.

BEautiful Pollonia at night

Beautiful Pollonia at night

Fishing Town of Firopotamos, Milos

Crystal Clear Turquoise Firopotamos Beach

  1. Go swim in the “tropical lagoon” of Firopotamos

Firopotamos is a small little fishing village that will make you feel like you are in the caribbean. The water is so blue and crystal clear. They do have some very tiny colourful houses, called sirmata, by the water.

These sirmatas might be nothing more than cute tiny colourful beach houses to us but fishermen made use of them to store their boats. Nowadays a good portion of them are converted into beach accommodation and tourists can choose to stay there and experience what it feels like to sleep and live so close to the water.

Even if you don’t check into a sirmata, you can still drop by and check it out. Don’t forget your bikini!

Mandrakia Fishing Village Milos

Breathtaking Mandrakia Fishing Village & Beach

 13. Take a daytrip to Mandrakia Beach & its Traditional Fishing Village

Mandrakia was one of my favorite places. It is quite similar to Firopotamos as it is another small colourful fishing village with crystal clear water. There is also a little church that you can visit.

Yoga in Mandrakia, Milos

Yoga in Mandrakia, Milos

Yoga in Mandrakia village

Not a Bad place to try yoga for his first time, eh?

  1. Yoga in Mandrakia

There’s not much to do in Mandrakia but it is the perfect place to go to explore and just disconnect. While you visit Mandrakia, you can also book a yoga session there. I promise it is magical. We booked one for sunset and it was out of this world.

Evi the lovely yoga instructor

Walking to the location with Evi, our lovely yoga instructor

There is a little area with white rocks formation just like Sarakiniko beach. This is where you’d be taken for the most relaxing yoga session ever. Evi, the instructor will give you an unforgettable time as you listen to the sound of the waves and watch the sunset. She brings the yoga mats, all you have to do is bring yourself there and perhaps some water too to stay hydrated. Don’t forget to dress comfortably 🙂

Firiplaka Beach, Milos

Peaceful Firiplaka Beach, Milos

15. Visit the Dreamy Turquoise Firiplaka beach

When it comes to Milos, everyone raves about Sarakiniko beach. Yes Sarakiniko beach is indeed majestic. The only thing is that it is also quite compact. So while you go to Sarakiniko for the views and the unique experience, Firiplaka beach is my favorite beach to relax with a minimal crowd. It is practical, simple and just beautiful.

The only thing is that you need to make sure you don’t show up on a stormy day. We went there twice and the second time it was a windy stormy day and we did not recognize the place. So just make sure you go on a calm sunny day and this place will take your breath away.

Climbing to Tsigrado Beach, Milos

Yep, you have to earn your way to the Tsigrado beach 🙂

Tsigrado Beach, Milos

A nice little challenge… Might not be for the claustrophobic…

Tsigrado Beach

The beautiful reward, Tsigrado Beach 🙂

  1. Test your Climbing skills at Tsigrado Beach

Right next to Firiplaka beach, there is Tsigrado beach. Tsigrado is a small cove with astounding water. Because it is a cove, just be ready to use the rope and make your way down there. Then you will have to climb back up using the rope and the makeshift access point. If you’re scared of heights, you should probably just go to take a look but not take the challenging trip down. Otherwise it makes for a fun little challenge or you can just arrive by boat.

  1. Visit the museums of Milos

Lastly, if you are craving some classic museum time. Milos still has a few to satisfy you. You will find an archeological museum, a mining museum, a folklore museum along with an ecclesiastical museum.

Milos even has a quirky sand museum where they create some art pieces using different sand types and shade. Photography lovers rejoice! You’ll be pleased to know that there is also a small cozy art house displaying a few unique pieces.

As you can see, Milos might be a small island. But there is plenty to keep you happy for a weekend or even a whole week. Don’t forget to check out my other Greek articles to help you plan your upcoming trip.
